How to Shampoo more Effectively!

hair101.jpg

This How To is for those of us trying to treat our hair better, but keep getting frustrated because our tactics do not seem to be helping.

Hair Patterns

There are many things that cause us to change the pattern of how and when we care for our hair:

1. New job that requires more bathing.
2. Just heard that washing your hair everyday is not good for it
3. Can’t understand why you hair gets oily so fast
4. Can’t understand why its so frizzy, but feels like silk
5. New hairstyle that requires more or different product
6. Stuck on old habits
7. Etc, etc, etc.

I know my frustration came from a few things, but mostly I was avoiding washing my hair everyday (who has time to style their locks every 24 hours?) but then I felt my hair wasn’t really clean! This frustrated me, because i had many friends doing the same thing with great success! Well one day i had a hair teacher say “if you can’t seem to get it the first time around, do it again” so i decided to try washing twice before i conditioned. What a difference!!! The soap even lathers up differently the second time. Weird? It totally works.

So now i shampoo every two to three days and am very happy with the results.

Shampoo: Try This

Shampoo: better to shampoo twice in a row than every day.
(unless you have that oh! so awesome extreme oil prone hair)

Many times people who try not to wash everyday fail to wash more thoroughly when they actually do shampoo. This causes frustration because the hair seems to get oily or dirty faster.

 Double shampooing: Try it.

#1: Focus on the Scalp. Once to focus (and i mean really focus) on that scalp! you need to remove the dead skin and oil buildup as to allow the scalp to breath and help new hair grow appropriately.

#2  focus on the rest of the hair and really make sure all of the grime is out!

Thanks! I am definitely going to try this. May hair always starts looking dirty about 24 hours after I wash it, and then it is REALLY dirty after 36 hours, so we’ll see if this can remedy that problem!

    Thanks, again!

Hey Maresah- I’d love to try this but….I run everyday (and/or otherwise get sweaty by working out/soccer practice!) What do you suggest for those of us in this predicament? =)

  3. Laney Says:

Hmmm, I’ll have to try that!
    Thanks for the tip! :)

I actually use BAKING SODA to clean my hair! It really works good for my hair, and its cheap too! I’m going to try using mayo on my hair to condition it today. Anyone tried this? I heard it helps keep it healthy…

I remember a day that I had to wash my hair no less than THREE times do to many different things, and my hair was oh so wonderful the next day.

I have very frizzy hair, and let me tell you, the next day was my best ever hair day with NO FRIZZ!!! :D

I didn’t think it was good for my hair, though, to do that all the time, but now that I hear it’s okay, I may just do that.

    Thanks, Maresah!!! :D

becca! washing everyday is ok..just not necessarily multiple times a day. perhaps try to schedule out when you are running etc so that you only have to wash once a day…like say if you shower in the morning to get ready for the day but go on a run when you get home then shower afterward, you’ve just shampooed twice which can be a bit much…you’re hair will probably start getting oily faster because it cant keep up with the stripping process of shampooing. i hope that makes sense: ) you could just try rinsing your hair after running in the evening.. then shampoo in the morning or visa versa (shampoo at the end of the day so you go to bed all clean, then rinse in the morning)
    hope that helps!

I think the number of times that you should shampoo changes with hair types. I have very curly, coarse hair and multiple shampoos would fry it. So I just wash it every few days, but I massage my scalp every time I shower. Seems to keep it clean enough in my case.

  8. maresah Says:

absolutely Erin! on the whole, my point is to do exactly what you do! really focus when you shampoo, target the scalp mostly, then work through the rest of the hair. this process allows the hair (in most cases) to last a couple days. thank you for sharing: )

I use baking soda too. And it really did get my scalp and hair clean. I only washed my hair once a week and it was fine.

However, I heard that it may be a little harsh if used too often ( depends on your hair type really) so I am now trying to go to just water and vinegar rinses twice a week. It is working well so far.

I know, I am really strange :) , but I have researched it. The main idea is that our hair’s natural oils are enough to take care of our hair. However, shampoo strips these oils away and as a result, causes our oil glands to produce excess oil, leaving our hair greasy. Follow the links below to learn more…

Wow! It really does feel different the second time! I really like shampooing twice and less frequently! Thanks, Maresah!
