How To Curl Your Lashes
Q: Would you like a straight up answer?
A: Curl them BEFORE you apply mascara!!
Whew, now that we got that out on the table, let me give you just a few pointers.
Curling the lashes is a simple 3 step process, again, done BEFORE the application of mascara.
Step 1. Position lash curler as close as possible to the base of the top lashes and curl (if you are too close, however, you can risk pulling lashes out so be careful).
Step 2. Slide curler half way down lashes and again, curl.
Step 3. Slide curler to the tips of the lashes and again, curl.
Now that you have completed the proper lash curling steps, go ahead and apply your preferred mascara!
Has anyone experienced an “oops” moment with their lash curler? Feel free to share…..I’m sure we’ve all done a similar thing at one point or another: )

I remember the first time I tried it, I started in the middle and squeezed so hard they bent back instead of curling. Needless to say, that looked pretty funny. I have learned how to do it since then.

P.S. I forgot to add, I did it AFTER mascara.

I’ll remember that; thanks for the tip!

I had an older (70 something) lady “advise” me that if I curled my lashes too often or everyday - they would just fall out one day. I was about 17 at the time and just laughed. About 5 years later it happened!! I went to use my daily curler and about 1/2 my lashes were absolutely gone. I’ve since realized I was curling them with too much force. Gentle is best when it comes to eyelashes. I still curl them daily, but with a lighter hand!!!

I can’t curl my lashes AT ALL….they’re so long that if I curl them even slightly they will hit my lids when my eyes are fully opened. I discovered this at a wedding when the makeup person curled my lashed and then put mascara on me…when she told me to open my eyes I ended up with black lines across my lids from the mascara. NOT attractive, lol!

Kristin, I don’t curl my eyelashes for the same reason. As it is, when I look up, my eyelashes almost hit my eyebrows. I prefer to just leave them. It does help to know how to do it, though.

Well, this didn’t happen to me, but my pastor’s wife said she was curling her hair with a curling iron. Her eyelash curler was sitting right next to where she was setting her iron. Then she went to curl her lashes. Ouch! Needless to say, she had some burns on her brows!!

I’ve heard that curling your eyelashes /can/ damage them over a period of time, even if you’re gentle. I love my eyelash curler, but I’ve restricted my use because of that. Do you have any info on that, Maresah?
Thanks for the tips!

Mikaela, i’m sure you have read the other comments posted about accidents with the lash curler. Basically, as with any other beauty tool, if misused or over used can probably cause some damage. As Jessica said, “use a lighter hand”, this will help avoid too much strain on the tender lashes. I, myself have not found a problem with using a curler as long as it is used correctly and in moderation. Once a day or every other day should be just fine.
thanks everyone for your input!

I read in a magazine that if you use a blowdryer to ‘heat up’ your eyelash curler it acts as a curling iron… needless to say, I didn’t take into account that the metal portion that would be touching my eyelid and under my brow would also be heating up.. my lashes looked great but my skin was burnt. :/

Maresah,
Great tip! This may be a really basic question, but how often should I replace my eyelash curler? I’ve had the same one for awhile, and wondered if replacing it more often would be a good idea?

What price range should I look for in getting an eyelash curler? I usually shop at Walmart and the like… so I’m not sure about these types of things qualitywise.
Thanks for the tips Maresah! It’s really great to have you around, though I do miss hearing from Christa!!

I rarely curl my lashes, but when I do, I warm it with tap water and dry before curling. Just be careful with temperature control.

one of the first times I curled my eyelashes I got my bottom lashes stuck in the curler and they looked really funny when I was done

ahh!! i just realized i never answered some of your questions from this blog post….grrrr. sorry for the delay!
Shelley! nope! no need to replace it unless it’s malfunctioning in some way, although, i do suggest cleaning it often with rubbing alcohol to disinfect it and help keep it free of unnecessary buildup .
Megan! pricing vs. quality is somewhat a point in this situation…but regardless of where you get it, the cost could really be anywhere between $3 and $20. although i have tried to go a little cheaper by buying one at even Target (and i love Target) i still was not happy with the quality. I would suggest investing just a little into a more effective tool. Check out Nordstrom at the makeup counter…they should set you up with what you need. Stay in your price range though ok! you don’t have to spend an arm and leg : )
