To tan or not to tan?!
This is not necessarily a ‘How To’ topic, but it is a great subject….very intriguing. And as we are heading into the somewhat sunless fall and winter months, the need to keep that sun kissed look weighs heavily on our minds. Here are some things i found interesting about the subject…
Tanning booths verses direct sunlight. After some heavy research, I have to say that exposure is exposure.
Many tanning salons claim to block out most all UVA rays “the Aging rays” from the sun, and filter the UVB rays “the Burning rays” from the sun. Although, what people don’t realize, is that the rays in a tanning booth are about two to three times as strong as those directly from our sun. Hence, why you only have to go for about 8 to 12 minutes as apposed to laying beside the pool anywhere from 20 to 60 minutes. So the point in this case, is after the salon has “blocked out the UVA” and “filtered the UVB” you’re still getting the same, if not still more damage from the booth as you would just being outside!
Also, ever heard that you CAN’T get skin cancer if you tan in a booth? Soooo false!!! the risk is actually just the same if not more, due to the intense localization of the light rays. Its crazy to look at some statistical studies….

basically my philosophy is “all things, if you must have them, in moderation!”
also, you will hear me talk soon about daily facial moisturizers with SPF …not a bad idea to get yourself one! Guys included!! it not only helps protect your skin against daily pollutants, but also daily light that effects your skin even through those fall overcast skies!!

Who needs a tan?? Bring back the fad of pale skin (you know, from the 1800s)! It’s healthier, at least.

I’ll confess that I envy those who can tan easily (without burning). I have lighter skin, and can never seem to tan unless I burn to a crisp, let the burn fade slightly, burn over the previous burn, let it fade and repeat! Which I try not to do, since it hurts so much.
I second Jordan! Bring back the pale skin!

White is the new tan.
I put sunscreen on every morning, and often re-apply it later on (which helps, since I live in California, though I am beginning to get freckles, in spite of my precautions).

Hey, I’ve got tons of freckles (I think it’s genetic, cause so does everyone else in my family) but I have a decent tan. Of course, because I’m very fair skinned to begin with, a fair tan for me is still white to everyone else.
Maresah, what are your thoughts on self-tanning lotions? Or even tanning sprays? I’ve thought about those, but I’m really cautious because I don’t know anything about them.

This is a great video from Samantha Chapman (Pro make-up artist) on sunless tanners, she is from Europe however so I don’t know how much money the products would cost in America…
Her sister did the Audrey Hepburn make-up tutorial that Christa posted awhile ago….

what a great video! thank you for sharing kayla……she also has more wonderful videos with tips on making eyes smaller or bigger, etc.
also, comparing costs between europe and the states, we’re looking around $15 to $40 depending on the brand.
a product not mentioned is Aveda’s self-tanner….great for your skin, over 97% naturally derived, and smells wonderful!
ps…i personally love pale skin…..i call all my fair skinned friends, my china dolls: )….absolutely beautiful!!

I’ve been a rep for Arbonne International for a little over a year now, and just this summer tried the self tanner (we were going on vacation and i didn’t want my legs to hurt peoples’ eyes!). I have to say I LOVE it! There are no orange tints, only brown, so it looked really natural, even with my freckles (I’m a fair skinned redhead too!) . It comes in a spray and has built in SPF. It’s $28 I think.

I like my skin like it is. Light enough to be fair, yet not too fair, like the weak milky kind. Who needs a tan when God gave us the nice skins we got already, with a plethora of shades! : )

I have kind of medium olive (no that dose not mean green) I tan really nicely during the summer but I’d rather not because I don’t want skin cancer.
during winter especially I like to add warmth and depth to my face with warmth all over, it’s from Bare Escentuals my favorite makeup ever, you hardly have use any, its a tiny jar but it lasts forever.
