Design your Dream Dress Contest!
At Christa-Taylor, we are proud of our community and we relish opportunities to partner with like-minded empowered Traditionalists. (What’s an empowered Traditionalist? Find out here: >)
With that said, we are excited to announce our largest community event yet: a full scale dress design contest. The winning design will be part of our Spring 2010 line, and the chosen designer will receive one of the completed dresses compliments of the C-T staff.
Judging the Work:
Christa, and a few members of the design team, will select the top three design entries. These designs will then be featured on our website and (this is the best part) YOU, our friends, will get to vote on your favorite.
Submissions:
All submissions must be entered by July 25th, when the voting will begin. The winning designer will be selected August 15th.
Only one submission per person will be accepted.
Mail submissions to:

Guidelines:
Here’s what we’re looking for:
-Vintage inspired, in basic colors.
-No patterned fabric (i.e. stripes, plaids, florals)
-Keep the standard. The design should be self-sufficient, you don’t have to wear a tshirt or camisole underneath it.
-No formals. This is a dress to wear and to wash in everyday life. No prom gowns please.
-Fabric swatches, if you have a fabric idea, send it along; the design team would love it.
-Patterns (as in a dress makers pattern) are preferred, but not necessary. If you develop a pattern, by all means- send it! We will return it as per your request.

This is SO COOL!!! *starts planning immediately*
April 9th, 2009 at 6:22 am
You are a hoot!! This is such a fun idea. I can’t wait to see what comes of this.
April 9th, 2009 at 6:33 am
Hi Christa, this sounds so cool, but I am a little confused by one part of your guidelines
First you say,
-No patterned fabric
Then you say,
-Patterns are preferred, but not necessary. If you
develop a pattern, by all means- send it! We will return it as per your request.
Can we design with patterns, or not?
Again, this sounds so cool and I can’t wait to get out my pencils and start designing.
April 9th, 2009 at 7:31 am
Tara-Lynn,
The confusion is because of two different meanings of “pattern” The adjective “patterned” is talking about a pattern or design IN the fabric. The noun “pattern” in this case is talking about a paper pattern that you use to make the DRESS, rather than the design in the FABRIC of the dress. (Sorry for the all caps. I’m not doing the all cap hollering thing–I just don’t know how to italicize or underline in a comment).
If, in addition to your drawing, you want to design the actual pattern from which others could cut out and make your dress piece by piece, it sounds like they are welcoming that. The other alternative, it seems, is for you to submit the drawings of your dress from the two views (front and back) and they will design the pattern for the actual steps of making the dress.
Hopefully that doesn’t make everything as clear as mud!

This sounds really cool and I might just enter, not that I’m very good at dress designing at all!
But if I find the time to think of a design- why not try? Especially if there’s a free dress in mix. Lol!
And I’m confused too about Tara-Lynn’s question!
April 9th, 2009 at 8:02 am
What a wonderful idea! I can’t wait to see what people come up with.
April 9th, 2009 at 8:08 am
I think what Christa probably means by no patterned fabric is that it’s supposed to be solid colored not with designs. And “patterns preferred” means an actual patter/”blueprint” for the dress. Don’t quote me on that… it’s just what I took it to mean.
April 9th, 2009 at 8:27 am
I clarified the post regarding the pattern issue.
April 9th, 2009 at 9:44 am
Christa this is so exciting! I can’t wait to see what everyone comes up with. I posted about this contest on my new blog, too.
April 9th, 2009 at 12:05 pm
Oh how fun! I don’t sew much but have lots of ideas so I won’t have a pattern to send in.
I would love a button to put on my blog. Can you email one or make one a available to cut a paste?
April 9th, 2009 at 2:26 pm
I am not very learned in “vintage clothing”… so if I need some ideas, is there a site I can look at or something? I have ideas, but I’m just not sure if they are based on vintage…
April 9th, 2009 at 8:18 pm
Oh, how fun! Thank you for giving us the opportunity to do something like this! I love drawing dress designs, but usually with contests like this you have to develop a pattern to go along with the design, and unfortunately, I have no skill in that area! I’ve been working on my design all day today, I am so excited about this!!
April 9th, 2009 at 10:24 pm
oh cool! Thank you for hosting this… I can’t wait to see what people send in.

April 10th, 2009 at 1:32 pm
So, I’m a little confused. Is it okay to make a pattern and then send in the finished product with the pattern? Or did you want us to just sketch it?
April 10th, 2009 at 1:33 pm
This is awesome! I was hoping you would do this again! I am so excited about it!
April 10th, 2009 at 9:46 pm
I was wondering, if someone sent in drawings of the dress, could they also send in pictures of what their finished dress looked like? Side, back front..as well as the drawings?
April 11th, 2009 at 9:39 am
Yes Ma’am.
April 11th, 2009 at 11:17 am
Thanks so much for doing this! I can’t wait to start on my dress!
April 11th, 2009 at 4:24 pm
YES- if you can, send patterns! But if you don’t have seamstress skills or don’t know how to make a pattern, a sketch will suffice.

April 13th, 2009 at 3:32 pm
Do the sketches have to be done by the designer? For example, my sister wants to enter, but doesn’t think she can sketch her idea very well. Could I sketch what she tells me to and then have her approve of it and send it in?
April 13th, 2009 at 3:37 pm
Jordan, you can sketch it our for her, that’s fine.
May 1st, 2009 at 3:55 am
This is so cool. I realy enjoy fashion, yet it is not always modest. This site allows you to be fashionable yet please God while doing so. thank you so much. I am looking forward to working om my design.
May 11th, 2009 at 2:19 pm
I am SO EXCITED for this contest! I’ve always wanted to participate in something like this! One question, though: do we color our sketches?
May 11th, 2009 at 9:40 pm
You are more than welcome to color the sketches.
May 14th, 2009 at 2:38 pm
This is awesome, Thanks Meghan H.!

I was wondering, can the dress have a removable jacket?
July 2nd, 2009 at 4:31 pm
Yes! I’m almost done with my design! I just have to color it in. Thank you so much for this awesome opportunity!
July 2nd, 2009 at 5:37 pm
removable jacket- sure, why not?
July 2nd, 2009 at 6:40 pm
Awesome!
July 3rd, 2009 at 7:32 am
I was also wondering, would I be able to sketch the jacket, and the dress and other pieces as separate sketches? Or just one?
July 3rd, 2009 at 10:24 am
whatever is fine…just put them in somehow
July 3rd, 2009 at 12:01 pm
Thank you! It’ll look so much better now.
It’s still just one outfit though.
July 7th, 2009 at 11:09 am
This is just the niftiest idea ever… I do have a question though. I have some vintage patterns, varying from the 1920’s to the 1950’s… mostly apron patterns, and all of which have expired their copyright. I have been thinking of modifying some of these into sort of current era housedresses. Would something like this be acceptable? Even though the base design is from an existing pattern? Thanks so much!
July 7th, 2009 at 4:10 pm
oh yes, that’s fine.
July 8th, 2009 at 5:26 am
This is such a wonderful idea!
I was wondering though, is it okay to send a copy of the sketches or do they have to be origionals?
July 8th, 2009 at 11:23 am
A copy is fine
July 8th, 2009 at 1:10 pm
Hey i have a question. Are you going to have another contest with a different theme. And when will we it be?
love ,
Olivia!!!!
My friend also has a question …..
what area of vintage are u talking about?
20’s, 30’s,40’s,50’s or 60’s?
please wright back!
July 8th, 2009 at 4:09 pm
this is so great i have never done a contest can you do one again?
July 11th, 2009 at 10:24 pm
To Olivia,
No particular era- but mostly the 50s-60s. : )
July 13th, 2009 at 5:56 pm
I am finally done and it is set to send out (yipee!) but I have one question. I did not sketch the backside of the dress because there is nothing noteworthy about it. Is this fine?
July 13th, 2009 at 8:45 pm
yep, just fine.
July 21st, 2009 at 8:47 pm
I entered! I’m sending my entry soon.
July 23rd, 2009 at 10:06 am
will it still be accepted if the entry will come exactly on the 25th?
July 23rd, 2009 at 9:13 pm
most likely. Just have it post-marked by then.
August 28th, 2009 at 8:56 am
Christa,
you work is very nice. I would like to know when will you have another contest? I would be interested in sending in a drawing. I share your thoughts on modest designing. Please let me know when the next contest is. Thank You.
Kristy from Louisiana.
