Summer Style: Printed skirts and chunky heels

Thursday, April 30th, 2009

June and July rolls around, and we all start sweating off our skin…so how do we stay cool and chic?

Try this combo-

To keep the look laid back, and “backyard BBQish” pair your printed skirt with a bright blouse. White is crisp yes, but also formal. The unexpected Pop of color communicates confidence and a solid sense of relaxed style.

Key Pieces:

-Bright sleeveless button down

-Printed skirt, have fun with this, you could even do a zebra print!

-Balance out that femmy skirt with Chunky platform heels. If you’re not a heels girl, opt for gladiator style sandals or even netural flip-flops (make it easy on yourself).

Summer Style: How to wear a peasant top

Tuesday, April 28th, 2009

Styling an outfit is primarily about contrast, in this case- billowy and narrow, casual and formal, boho and urban…you get the idea.

Because Peasant tops are so voluminous, you want to pair it with something more narrow or shapely on bottom. If you were to match a peasant top with a full A-line or circle skirt you would end up a shapeless, gunny sack girl.

That is not a good thing.

Key pieces:

- Full top. The top doesn’t have to be Peasant, any full top will do.

-narrow/shapely skirt. It can be straight (i.e. straight denim skirt), but nothing that veers to far towards A-line.

-summer sandal. If you’re dressing up- go metalic, if you’re casual, stick with a cute espadrille or flip-flop.

Fashion Friday: British Babydoll

Friday, April 24th, 2009

ffbritishbabydoll.jpg

I always wanted to look like a British Babydoll.

‘Course, I don’t even know what they look like ;-)

British Babydoll, the beauty is in the sleeves, and don’t forget that graceful collar that draws the eye up to the face.

If you’re looking for a classic white blouse with a little bit of ease over the abs- this is the blouse for you.  (did I mention it’s unusally quality fabric- no “see throughs” here, though as always, I would recommend beige underthings)

Was $47-

Now it’s $29.99

24 hours only.

Should Susan be Sexy?

Thursday, April 23rd, 2009

It was a drop-jaw moment. The 47 year-old spinster from Scotland, the perfect description of your “Irish Washerwoman”, the unlikeliest of candidates, - she shocked the world.

40 million youtube hits later, Susan Boyle is the latest musical phenomenon. (Haven’t seen it? Click here)

But will this late-blooming nightengale survive? The Beauty sector joined hands with the mass media to “encourage” Boyle to go for a complete beauty makeover, plastic surgery and all.

Hannah Farver (Beauty From the Heart) and I hit the streets, curious to hear the public’s reaction to plastic surgery and the pressure to be beautiful.

How to wear a Strapless

Friday, April 17th, 2009

Fashion is all about taking current trends and making them fit your personal style. Sometimes that can mean abandoning certain trends as entirely unwearble, sometimes it means a little alteration and mix-and-matching.

Let’s look at the Strapless dress, you can find it anywhere, and as long as it provides enough coverage over the bust/cleavage this prevalent piece can be translated into a killer outfit.

The pieces:

-Floral/Printed Strapless dress

-Shrunken blazer

-tough heels

-fun bag of your choice

Gallery skirt, a cream base scattered with black floral-

Personally, I would pair this with a graphic tee, a sweet beaded necklace, a fitted jacket/blazer and a fedora. (Maybe I’ll go change into that right now…;)

It’s $28.

$15 off. Discount taken after purchase.

Help us name ‘em…

Girls- I feel like an expectant mom- I have new products coming but no names!

Let’s just say you had a new knee-length denim skirt coming- what would you name it?
What about a vintage inspired black/white dress with polka dot accents?

Wishing she could name everything George,

Christa

P.s. Don’t I have the cutest nephew? My sister Lindsay, over at Passionate Homemaking, just had her baby pictures done ;)

No, we’re not talking about helmets, we’re talking feathers.

That’s right, available at a plethora of boutiques and even some of the mainstream retailers (Target) - feathers, blossoms and headbands are making a huge statement this Spring/Summer.

SheZoom gives us some fun ideas on what this trend looks like, and how to wear it.

Curvy hips: Style Secrets

Wednesday, April 8th, 2009

curvyhips.jpg
Curvy Hips:

You have:  narrow or sloped shoulders, small to medium bust with a smaller waist. You have full hips and bottom.

It’s all about playing with proportion, and learning what to highlight.

 Your Style Secrets:

1. Draw eyes north with bold or light colors/prints on top and dark shades on bottom. Keep your choices simple and save all the visual interest for the tops.

2. Broad necklines (boatnecks, square, ballet) equalize your figure.

3. Jackets, long cardigans and dress shirts worn open create a lengthening effect, minimizing the appearance of wider thighs.

4. Avoid bells and whistles on your bottoms. Appliques, small pockets, cargo pockets, plaids, horizontal pattern, oversized prints.

Classic pieces to look for:

-light reflecting earings, they draw the attention to your face, away from your hips. Make them bold.

-a dark, slightly tapered skirt obscures fuller hips.

-small floral prints make your top half stand out.

-Feminine belted jackets evens out proportions.

- empire dresses. Your best silhouette with its emphasis on the upper body, a feminine neckline and a fuller shape that smoothes over your hips. (Trivia Tidbit: Lizzy Bennett in the old Pride and Prejudice concealed her full hips with those empire waist dresses)
