Slick Side Part-

p_19_hairstyles_p04.jpg

Step 1: For a very contemporary look, blow hair straight with a round brush, and straighten with iron as necessary.

Step 2: Make a deep Side part and tuck behind ear.If a more relaxed look is desired, only tuck hair behind one ear.

Step 3: Using a fine-toothed comb, distribute smoothing serum through hair until hair has the wet/sleek look.

 Boho Curls:

p_19_hairstyles_p08.jpg

How to:
Step 1: Curl one-inch sections of hair with a curling iron held vertically all over your head.

Step 2: Because hair will likely look poufy, use bobby pins to pin down areas that look too voluminous to create an overall shape you like.

Step 3: Disguise pins by covering them with other curls.
Step 4: Mist with hairspray to set.

 Half-up Bouffant:

p_19_hairstyles_p16.jpg

How to:
Step 1: Spritz the roots of your hair at the crown with thickening spray for added volume.
Step 2: Divide hair in half horizontally.
Step 3: Use your teasing comb or brush to backcomb the top section of hair. Tease heavily for mega volume.
Step 4: Smooth over the top of the teased section with a brush to hide the backcombing.
Step 5: Pin the sides of your hair back, crisscrossing the bobby pins to anchor them. (See photo A.)

Bangs or no Bangs?

bangs.jpg

If you have a wide or sloping forehead, bangs can be a serious asset.

Do:

A good trick is to hold your hair above your eyebrows to see how you will look with bangs.

Try as many bang variations as possible to get a feel of what type of bangs you want to live with.

Look at some pictures and bring in 1-2 to your hair-stylist.

Don’t:

If cutting your own, don’t use cheap paper scissors! Hair sheers are inexpensive and will prevent hair damage from blunt edges.

Dress up your hair

The most important rule of accessorizing: The fancier the clip, the more undone the hair should be.
Do try:

• one bold barrette. Clip it off-center right at the hairline, or to the side of a chignon in back. (Only use one if you have thick or very curly hair—a heavy clip can damage baby-fine strands.)

• Group them. Four or five tiny rhinestone barrettes look pretty in a relaxed updo.

• Try using jewelry to dress up your hair. Wrap a sparkly necklace around the base of a ponytail or bobby-pin a brooch to the hair.

• Don’t be childish. Avoid anything with bows— they look silly on anyone over age eight.

• Watch the sides. When you attach a big clip to the side of your head, make sure you put it behind your ear, so you can’t see the entire clip from the front.

How to look Thinner

Tuesday, January 13th, 2009

howtolookthinner.jpg

No surprise. This is the question we hear most frequently. Every girl I’ve ever met, skinny, large, or average thinks she’s fat. So rarely do I find a girl who is comfortable in her own skin. Learning how to have style is all about expressing your personality- your color preferences- the era and styles you are drawn to. The idea that you have to be thin to be beautiful and chic is outmoded. Who wrote those rules anyway?

Comfortable in your own skin? There are no hard-and-fast rules, but here’s how to give the illusion that you just lost ten pounds.

-Wear black

-Wear the right undergarments-spanx or a body thinner for a leaner line (they did this everyday in the ’50s girls)

-Dress in a monochramatic scheme-head-to-toe in on e color or in a neutral tone.

-High heels

-Jackets, dresses, and blouses with tailored shoulders. If you’re narrow waisted, wear a belt to emphasize your tiniest part. If your waist is nowhere to be found, buy Empire dresses that are fitted just below the bust.

-The hem of a skirt should fall at the slimmest part of your leg, either below the calf or just at the knee- modesty is first and foremost here ;)

And it only take 3 steps…

 Do:

1. Blow your hair so it’s smooth, then part it in the center. Use a round brush and pull the hair up and away from the head to give it some volume. A light misting of hair spray will help.

2. Soften face-framing pieces with a large-barrel curling iron. Wrap two- to three-inch sections around the barrel and hold each in place for 30 seconds before releasing. Repeat on as many sections as you like, then mist the curls with an aerosol hair spray. Use Hot Rollers if preferred, but loosen gently after roller removal.

3. Grasp a three-inch section of hair at your forehead and gently tease it with a comb—this keeps the pulled-back style from looking severe. Smooth it with your palm, then spritz with hair spray and loosely pin it back (about two inches behind your forehead) with a plain silver or gold clip. Keep shorter bangs from slipping out by misting a clean toothbrush with hair spray and running it over them.

The Secret to making any outfit Fabulous

Tuesday, January 6th, 2009

accessorize.jpg
Ever wonder how some girls can make the most basic outfits still look really good? It could be jeans and a t-shirt and they exude style.

While some of us would blame it on their fantastic jeans, or perhaps the color they wore- there is another factor in play.

Here’s the secret to looking great in even the most basic clothes, something that the world’s most stylish girls have mastered: the art of accessorizing.

“If Clothes make the man, Accessories make the woman.” - Anne Fogarty, Wife Dressing

Putting the right accessories together is a basic fashion skill that separates well-dressed people from the blase’. The best part? You can find incredible accessories at any budget, so it’s a great way to stretch your wardrobe and save money.

How to Accessorize

Any outfit can go from boring, to stunning with the right accoutrements.  Here’s a few tips to try in 2009.

Do:

* Large earrings can be a great way to dress up a casual or formal outfit. They draw attention to your face and add sparkle. Whether 80’s door knockers are your thing, or you prefer chunky faux diamond studs, a statement earring can always add drama to an outfit.

* Long necklaces are a hot trend. They create long vertical lines which make you look taller and leaner! Have fun with long beaded necklaces or long chains with But beware, one chunky beaded necklace is enough. Too many and you risk looking like you just got back from Mardi Gras - not so cute.

* Be careful with proportions. If you’re wearing an outfit that is big and voluminous, scale back on the accessories. If you’re wearing something sleeker, you can go a little bigger and bolder with a chunky cocktail ring or big, bright handbag.

* Add a belt. Add a wide belt over a flowy dress, or use a brightly colored belt over a black cardigan and white tank to add interest to the outfit and emphasize your curves.

* The more basic the outfit, the bolder your accessories can be. Amazing outfits are all about balance. For example, pair a simple tee shirt and jeans combo with a pair of polka dot flats, a long sparkly pendant necklace and a few layered bangles in different types of metals. Accessories can add complexity and interest to a plain look, balancing everything out.

* Don’t wear too many accessories at once. There is such a thing as too much of a good thing, and you don’t want to resemble a kid playing dress up in mom’s closet. Exercise a little bit of restraint with accessories - if you have statement earrings on, don’t add bangles, a cocktail ring, and a scarf. Keep it to one or two main pieces.

* Try layering your bracelets. Stacked bangles are a hot trend this winter. Wear a bunch on one arm to easily add sparkle to an outfit.

* Buy accessories that convey a part of your personality. This is so important, and it’s also so much fun. When you buy accessories, go for pieces that you’re attracted to - even better if they have a personal meaning to you. I always tend to favor green, because they match my eyes and make me feel mischievous.

* Don’t be afraid to mix materials.  Mixing up your jewelry creates a fabulous vintage look, so don’t be afraid to throw things together and see what happens. Just Try it. You might come up with some amazing combos!

* Add pops of color. If your outfit is plain (black and white, black and grey, etc.), create a pop of color with jewelry, a scarf, a handbag, or a bright shoe. Remember that outfits don’t have to MATCH, but they do have to GO - keep things in similar color families (warm colors or cool colors), and you’ll generally be fine.
