Hot Hair Trend: Buns

05-27_hair-buns.jpg

From messy to super-sleek, here are a few fantastic bun looks to give you some variety this summer whether hitting beach or ballroom.

Round or angular shaped faces should use parts as a nice focal point to the face, while other face shapes can easily use a “ballerina” slicked back approach.

Insider tip: most of these styles are based off a ponytail. It gives stability and a platform for securing your bobby pins.

Ballerina how-to: be sure to spray your hair with hair spray before pulling it back, pin securely in place and lightly finish with a shine spray.

Tousled how-to: put your hair in a messy ponytail, tease the pony for added volume and lightly pin in place leaving a few pieces out to keep it relaxed around your face.

Yah, I’ve really been having fun with the tousled hair styles lately. Especially a lose, wispy braid.

Because I have a high forehead, I’ve found that leaving the side bangs down along with other strands of hair really softens things up.

    Christa -
I have a long face with a high forehead. I was wondering, what sort of hair style should I have, specifically what should my hair length be? I currently have been getting a chin-length cut, that is somewhat stacked. But I’ve been wanting a change. What do you suggest?

I have a higher forehead and a rounder face, so I usually don’t like my hair up. i.e. to copy the models picture, I’d look boring and twelve years old. Are there any tricks, or should I just leave down all the time?

Thanks so much for the pictures! ;o) I’m very visual so, it really helps. :)
p.s. I love the LWD post. Can’t wait to find one and try it out! :)

I used to be a ballerina. One tip is to invest in good hair pins. I really like the Bunheads brand. (check out discountdance.com) These hair pins are a little more expensive, but don’t bend easily and hold any kind of hair–they held my very thick, waist length hair. Another trick is to push the hair pins in at a 90 degree angle to your head, then flatten the angle and push it the rest of the way in. Don’t push the pins in in a straight line.

    hope that helps!

    Dear Grace,
With a long or oblong face (which means your face is longer, than it is wide) and highforehead, you want to balance the length of your face. Bangs will minimize your forehead, and a hairstyle with not height will also shorten the overall effect.
Hairstyles that create fullness at the sides of the face, side parts, fringes around the face, curls and outward flips all create an illusion of a wider, rounder face.

Be Sure to Avoid: Long hairstyles, which means anything too much past your shoulders, will just make your face look even more long and slender than it already is. If you must go long, be sure to go with a layered look with pieces that end at eye-level and cheekbone level. Center parts are also a no-no.

The best idea is to find someone with a similar face shape (a few celebrity suggestions would be: Gwyneth Paltrow, Cate Blanchett, Sarah Jessica Parker)
